The AGOGE Program
The Rehabilitation Center of Southern Maryland has developed a program to improve strength, speed, agility, power and overall athletic performance. This program will provide the latest and most proven neuromuscular techniques to improve your body control and fitness with an emphasis on injury prevention. Many experts view the ages of 12 to 18 as the most ideal ages for developing speed, strength and power over an athlete's entire lifetime. If your goal is to become faster, jump higher, get stronger and quicker this program will help you! Improving neuromuscular control is one of the most important factors in injury prevention. The program will be supervised by Physical Therapists specializing in orthopedics and sports medicine who will utilize exercise and eductation to improve control of the body. The program is a high intensity program that will challenge you as you improve!

What is Sports Rehabilitation?
Rehabilitation Center of Southern Maryland Physical Therapists and Athletic Trainers not only treat injured athletes, but deal with many common muscular complaints such as back pain, mobility problems, postural problems and sports related conditions. In sports, our Athletic Trainers help injured athletes return to full performance, after injury. Injury treatment varies according to the sport or activity involved.
The Rehabilitation Center of Southern Maryland is proud to be the exclusive provider of Athletic Training Services for all of Charles and St. Mary’s County public high schools. Our teams of Athletic Trainers are available at practices, games and other events in each high school. While our hope is that no athlete sustains an injury, we are there to provide immediate care when an injury does occur and assist in getting the athlete back into competition as quickly and safely as possible through proper rehabilitation techniques.
What techniques does the Rehabilitation Center of Southern Maryland use to return Athletes to activity?
Sports specific strength and agility training
Electrotherapy (Ultrasound/Interferential/TENS)
Kinesio and McConnell Taping Techniques
Education in proper muscle strengthening
Muscle stretching techniques (including muscle energy techniques)
Core Stability Training
Proprioception training
Rehabilitation Center of Southern Maryland Charles and St. Mary’s County Student Athletic Training Program
I. Mission Statement:
To provide a program where students can explore a possible future in a sports medicine career.
II. Goal Statement
Students in grades 9-12 can participate in this program to learn more about opportunities in sports medicine by aiding Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC) at their school. This program will provide each student with hands on knowledge of the profession and responsibility for everyday duties and procedures.
III. About the program:
a. Opportunity to sign-up for Fall, Winter, or Spring seasons
b. After school approximately 10 – 15 hours a week
c. Will assist the ATC with every day responsibilities
d. Will be certified in First Aid and CPR
e. Will observe evaluation, care and prevention of common injuries according to in-season sports
f. Will always be under the supervision of the ATC
IV. Sign-up:
a. Prospective students will complete a formal application to be reviewed by the ATC
b. ATC will choose approximately 2-4 students per season. (Fall 4/Winter 2/Spring2)
c. Students will also fill out a survey at the end of the year
d. Students can not participate if participating in a sport during the same season
e. Students will follow same rules of an athlete for eligibility requirements
V. Responsibilities include but not limited to:
a. Making ice bags
b. Cleaning tables and equipment
c. Making sure the athletes sign in for treatment in the training room
d. Pre game preparation determined by the ATC and sport
e. Can change based on school and ATC
VI. First Aid and CPR:
a. Students must be First Aid and CPR certified
b. Certifications must be kept current
c. For those students that are not First Aid and CPR certified, information on classes will be posted.
VII. Students are encouraged to watch the ATC during evaluations and treatment:
a. Are encouraged to ask questions
b. Must maintain confidentially – cannot talk about individual athletes or their injuries outside of the athletic training room.
VIII. Students will NOT be able to (as stated in the NATA Official Statement of Supervision of Athletic Training Students Aids):
a. Interpret referrals from other healthcare providers
b. Perform evaluations
c. Make decisions about treatments procedures or activities
d. Plan patient care
e. Independently provide athletic training services during team travel
IX. Students are expected to be:
a. Prompt
b. Determined
c. Responsible
d. Aware
e. Self reliant
